Is a yellowish vaginal discharge that is persistent after having sex an indication of a UTI or STD?

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

One month back, I had sex, and I did not urinate until the next morning. A week later, I started discharging. I have been dealing with a yellowish discharge for about three weeks now. It does not have a smell. My urine appears cloudy, and I have minor cramps now and then. There is no itching or burning when I urinate. I am not sure if it is a UTI or an STD. Should I go to the doctor, or should I get tested? Kindly help.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I had gone through the details and photographs attached (attachments removed to protect the patient's identity). There is nothing much to worry about as long as you are experiencing only yellow discharge and do not have any itching or burning. But there are some chances for some infections like Chlamydia. There is nothing to panic about; in that case, I suggest starting with a mild antibiotic dose, and you will be better within three to four days.

Did you use barrier contraception or some other contraceptive, or was it unprotected intercourse? Have you experienced this problem earlier as well? What is your period history? Did you have intercourse again after this, and did you experience any pain? Kindly reply for a better assessment.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thanks for the reply.

Yes, we did use protection during intercourse. I have not been sexually active after this incident. There is no burning, itching, or any other irritation. Last day I have experienced light cramps. As far as my period, I skip periods, so sometimes it does not come consistently every month. Sometimes I will not have periods for months, and then I will have regular periods for some time. I have never been on birth control. Is this yellow discharge normal?

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

There is nothing to get stressed or to panic about. I suggest getting yourself tested once for Chlamydia to rule out this condition. Treatment for that is simple antibiotics like tablet Azithromycin single dose or tablet Doxycycline twice daily for seven days. Kindly share the report once you get tested.

Patient's Query

Thank you doctor,

I will continue updating you.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

Thanks for giving an update on your health. In fact, I was worried about Chlamidya as it is a thing that can have serious ramifications. I am really happy for you. How is the discharge now? Is it still there? If yes, then tell whether flow has reduced or remained the same? Do you have any bleeding? Thank you for sharing the report. Would you please share the discharge details if there are any other details? Now I do not think there is any major worry. Feel free to ask any questions or to share any additional information. God bless.

Patient's Query

Thank you doctor,

Yes, it is still there. It has been like this for a month now. The flow has reduced, but it is still there. There is no bleeding, just the yellow discharge. My pee is cloudy, and it still shows up when I wipe. Is there any medication I can take for this? Would you be able to diagnose me? Even though it is not bothering me, it still worries me that it is still here for over a month.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I have gone through the details shared by you. Since all reports are negative and you have discharge alone without associated symptoms, it might be a mixed vaginal infection. I will recommend vaginal pessary for five days and a probiotic available easily. Have leafy vegetables and take a good quantity of fluids. Also, you can get a urine RE (Routine Examination) done to check if there are any non-required cells in urine. Do not worry. I am always there for you. Feel free to ask any questions or to share any additional information. God bless.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
