How is Waist to Hip Ratio (WHR) calculated?


The Waist to Hip Ratio is estimated using the formula given below.

Waist to Hip Ratio = Waist in inches / Hip in inches

For this, you need your waist size and hip size in inches.

To know your accurate waist and hip measurements, you need to do the following.
  • For waist measurements, you need to stand up straight and breathe out. Keep your measuring tape just above your belly button and measure the distance around the smallest part of your waist.
  • The distance around the largest part of your hips and the widest part of your buttocks will give you the hip measurements.

Health Risk levels


  • When a male's Waist to Hip Ratio is 1 and above and when a female's Waist to Hip Ratio is 0.90 and above, the person is said to be in an extreme health risk range. The person needs urgent medical help.
  • When a male's Waist to Hip Ratio is between 0.95 and 1 and when a female's Waist to Hip Ratio is between 0.85 and 0.90, the person is said to be in a high health risk range. Medical advice is warranted.
  • When a male's Waist to Hip Ratio falls between 0.90 and 0.95 and when a female's Waist to Hip Ratio falls between 0.80 and 0.85, the person is said to be in an average health risk range.
  • When a male's Waist to Hip Ratio falls between 0.85 and 0.90 and when a female's Waist to Hip Ratio falls between 0.75 and 0.80, the person is deemed to be in a good health risk range.
  • Finally, when a male's Waist to Hip Ratio is below 0.85 and when a female's Waist to Hip Ratio is below 0.75, the person is said to be in an excellent health risk range.
