I am 27, male. Why do I feel a sharp pain in my upper back?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 27-year-old male. I have a strange feeling on my right side and it all started right after i ate and drank a lot. And sometimes my colon feels like it is twitching when I eat something, but not all the time. Also, when I move, I can feel a sharp pain in my right upper back. My stools have been normal. I have noticed a few narrow stools, but that is rare. I do have a feeling of incomplete bowel movements. I have not lost weight. However, I do feel bloated a lot. No family history of cancer. Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

You must be anxious about your recent symptoms. Drinking alcohol mainly causes this trouble. Alcohol is basically a carbohydrate and produces gases after its intake. Otherwise, your symptoms are general and can occur to anybody and do not point to a particular diagnosis. I would suggest the following measures:

1) Capsule Rifaximin (antibiotic) 200 milligrams thrice daily for two weeks.

2) Capsule Esomeprazole (proton pump inhibitor) 40 mg once daily, half an hour before meals for one week.

3) Ispaghula husk (husks of the seeds of Plantago ovata), two tablespoons full with a glass of water.

4) Avoid deep fry, milk, beef, sausages, cold drinks, and fatty or sweet-rich foods.

If it does not settle within a week, I suggest you visit a physician in person.

I hope you are satisfied with my answer. For further queries, you can consult me at iCliniq.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Is this IBS? Or similar to cancer? I have had this for about a month now. I have tried to avoid junk foods; nothing has changed. It is uncomfortable, but I am not in pain.

Please advise.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

No, it does not seem to be IBS (irritable bowel syndrome). They are just abnormalities of your bowel's function, which can quickly occur after alcohol drinking or gas-producing foods, and partly due to some infections. For IBS, one has to have symptoms for at least three months or suggest cancer. Only diet may not help you solve the problem. That is why I suggested some medications.

I hope you are satisfied with my answer. For further queries, you can consult me at iCliniq.

Thank you.
