Will medical abortion using Mifepristone and Misoprostol affect future pregnancies?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I had a medical abortion using the combination of Mifepristone and Misoprostol. During the procedure, I had severe cramping and bleeding. After the procedure, I felt a mass passing through my vagina.

A week after, I went to get an ultrasound to see if the abortion was successful. The ultrasound showed the following results:

1. Myoma nodule.

2. Endometrium intact.

3. Polycystic ovaries.

What do these findings mean? Does that mean my abortion was successful? Will these findings have any effect on my future pregnancy?

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I shall explain to you the ultrasound findings.

The endometrium is intact and thick, but there are no retained products. So it will resolve on its own. Do not worry about that. It is normal to have endometrial hypertrophy after abortion. Your abortion is complete. You have to wait for your next menses.Myoma is a benign (non-cancerous) growth inside in uterus. It is minimal in your case. It needs a follow-up.Polycystic ovaries are a finding in polycystic ovarian syndrome. If your cycles are regular, you do not have to do anything. Try to maintain your body weight, walk 10,000 steps a day and change your dietary habits.

None of the findings in your ultrasound is serious. I suggest you take a blood test to know your hemoglobin levels, and I also suggest taking an iron tablet once a day for three months.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thank you for the comprehensive explanation. I am worried about whether my abortion could affect my future pregnancies. Based on the ultrasound, is there something to worry about? As to PCOS, I have heard that it is one of the common causes of infertility in women, and I am not sure how such a condition would impact my future pregnancies after having an abortion.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

This abortion is not going to affect your future pregnancies. But yes, PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome) affects fertility as most often ovulation does not happen in these patients as they have infrequent menses. But when they reduce weight or maintain the normal weight and change lifestyle in terms of food and exercise, these changes tend to improve. You will need medication to ovulate, and some ovulogens as PCOS women also have problems with egg quality but not always.
