Why does my child have a lump on the canine tooth?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Today, my six-year-old showed us that he has a lump above his right canine. It is about the size of a small pea. It is red but looks yellowish under the skin. It has a tiny bubble on it as well. While looking, it seems that he has a cavity in a nearby tooth (to the rear).

He says it does not hurt. Even lets us touch it. But he does say that while biting, it hurts a little. Should we take him to the emergency room tonight or get him to a dentist as soon as we can get an appointment? Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understand your concern.

There is no need for an emergency unless it is painful. You should get him to a dentist as your kid has an abscess due to the cavity of one of his milk teeth. He needs antibiotics for a week and maybe root canal treatment of that tooth so that it can stay there for at least four more years till its usual shedding time comes.

I hope this helps.

Kindly revert in case of further queries.

Thank you.
