How do I manage palpitations, throat pain, and foamy stool?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Before a month, I had a feeling of heart palpitation and some beats below my throat after having a party meal. I am a vegetarian. So after checking ECG, I started taking Pan IT in the morning and evening, Gaviscon and Ciplar for ten days. My heartburn has gone. But I have a little bit of throat pain when I yawn or swallow food. I have lost two to five kilograms weight in one month. I changed my lifestyle. I had foamy poop thrice in these days. Is it because of antacids? How long is the course of Pan IT safe?

Kindly advise.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

It is safe for a short-term period, for a month or two. But if necessary then the long-term is also continued as the side effects are not very serious. So I would suggest that you have it for a week. Then make it once a day and then take in a week or two. Most probably it is due to acidity and gastritis. Do you have upper abdominal pain, nausea, bloating, burping, increase in pain on food intake, sour water feeling in throat or chest burning? These are the other symptoms and may be associated.

You should avoid fatty, oily and spicy diet. Have some walk after having food instead of taking rest. Have multiple small meals instead of heavy meals. Have regular sleep habits and avoid stress. Take lots of green leafy vegetables, and fruits. Avoid smoking and alcohol if any. If not adequately relieved, then you should add Syrup Sucral O (Sucralfate with Oxetacaine) or Gelusil (Aluminum hydroxide, Magnesium hydroxide, and Simethicone) two teaspoons three times a day for a week. Elevate the head end of the bed or use pillows during sleep and rest.

Patient's Query

Thank you doctor,

What about foamy stool twice? Is it because of a Gaviscon or antacid? What about the feeling (like a heartbeat) below the throat when I drink hot? Is it some type of blister due to acid reflux? Will it be healed after keeping your advice right? Can I have Econorm with curd for five days? Will it be good?

Kindly advise.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

Yes, foamy and frequent stool occur due to Gaviscon. I guess you do not have such problem of foamy stool before taking Gaviscon. It is because of amoebic or worm infestation that can cause foamy stool and it will persist for a long time if caused by infections. So it is likely due to Gaviscon (Aluminium hydroxide with Magnesium carbonate). Usually, it is not worrisome. Due to acid reflux, there is some erosion in the food pipe which can be cured with antacids and proper lifestyle. Now, due to this erosion, drinking hot fluid further irritates the mucosa, and due to it, the heartbeat may be felt as the heart is situated near the food pipe. Also, you may have Econorm (Saccharomyces Boulardii) with curd which is a probiotic. Take it for three to four days. So overall, lifestyle modification is the key.

Patient's Query

Thank you doctor,

Yes, this foamy stool occurs only after having Gaviscon. The light pain beat below the throat while drinking hot seems to be from food pipe.

Kindly advise.
