Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Kindly answer my queries as elaborately as possible. I am looking for sexual health experts to talk about allergies that can occur during intercourse. Whether it is a condom allergy, lube allergy, or sperm allergy. I would like to hear about it.

1. What allergies can crop up during sex? And what allergic symptoms might someone notice as a result? (Condom allergy, lube allergy, sperm allergy, etc.)

2. Why is it important to know whether or not you are allergic to sex?

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I thoroughly read your query and understand your concern.

One can have an allergy to anything and this cannot be predicted, whether an individual will have an allergy or not to a particular thing. If we consider allergies to condoms or lubricants or semen, then the incidence is very less, and this could be due to social factors which prevent individuals to report the allergy to a doctor. Allergy to latex condoms is common of all these. Symptoms are rash over the penis or red rash over the vagina. Sometimes itching might be the main presenting symptom. Most individuals get relief from OTC (over-the-counter) antiallergics, so they seldom report to doctors. It is important to know if you are allergic to a substance or not because the development of an allergy might lead to negative feelings toward sex. Behavioral factors might play, in this case, and this could lead to anxiety too. Reporting about an allergy to a partner helps to prevent any unwelcome thing. The rashes could be taken as evidence of STD (sexually transmitted disease), and explaining prior to sex will help to prevent any emotional issues.

Hope this helps.

Thanks and regards.
