After eating chocolate, I feel a lump in my throat with lightheadedness. Is this anaphylaxis?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I have a fear of anaphylaxis. I have no reason to have this. I ate a chocolate bar with hazelnuts which I have done a million times. The minute I ate it and thought about it, I got a rough throat and was convinced that I could not breathe properly. It is over an hour now, and I am settled for it, but I am worried as I read that anaphylaxis can be pretty subtle at first. I am afraid if I go into anaphylactic shock later on and that this is anaphylaxis and its start. My BP and heart rate are all normal. It feels like a lump in the throat, and I feel lightheaded, but it can be expected with my anxiety. It has been an hour and a half now. When can I try and relax?

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

It will relapse over time, maybe after a while, or may take up to two days. Anaphylaxis is most common and is caused due to multiple reasons. It is best if you know the reason behind it so that you can avoid the stimulating factor. To prevent anaphylaxis shock or further complications, contain the agent causing it.

Preventive measures include:

1) Consume plenty of fluids.

2) Avoid Allergens causing it.

I suggest tablet Levocetirizine in case of allergy or rashes and Alex chewable lozenges (Dextromethorphan Hydrobromide 5 mg) for a rough throat.

Regards.
