Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Tiny bumps appeared on the inner corners of my mouth and upper lip; should I be concerned? This occurred randomly out of nowhere a few years ago and has not been cured fully. They disappeared on the left side of my mouth, but there are still some on the right side of my mouth. I do not have any past history of this issue, and I am not under any medication. I have not done any lab tests for this condition. Also, I am a virgin and have not kissed anyone yet, so this is weirding me out. Please help, doctor.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern. Your explanation and picture of the lesion (attachment removed to protect the patient’s identity) are suggestive that this condition can be cheilosis (swelling and fissuring of the lips) or angular cheilitis. It can occur due to these causes- Infection- fungal (candida) or bacterial infection may develop due to dribbling of saliva to corners of lips, nutritional deficiency- iron or vitamin B2 deficiency, dry, chapped lips, and using dentures. These are some common causes in an otherwise healthy person. Other causes can be systemic illnesses like Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis. It can be diagnosed by swab culture from the corner of the mouth, which may reveal the infectious agent. For treatment, I would suggest you take vitamin B complex supplements, topical antibacterial or antifungal ointment, lip balm and prevent dribble of saliva. Thank you.
