Is it common to have a shadow around the ankle after an ankle procedure that is bothersome but not painful?

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I underwent an ankle procedure and only recently got off crutches after six weeks. My surgeon advised me to begin walking, but to take it gently and slowly. Today, I walked to work to turn in my sick note and walked more than I recalled. I have not used my muscles enough, which is mostly why my foot pains but does not hurt so much. My primary concern is, is minimal bruising (merely a different shade of skin color, but not purple, more yellowish) typical while starting or going through rehabilitation? I will visit my physiotherapist the next day, but need an answer immediately. I constantly have this shadow around my ankle, but because it is post-operative, I am concerned. The region is also not sensitive to touch. Kindly help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

Six weeks after surgery, you have visited your doctor, who must have checked and reviewed your most recent X-rays before recommending you walk. You did walk with only minor pain. To answer your question, the discoloration at your ankle is typical, and if you have overdone the walking, a bruise would be the last thing you would look for. You would have noticed increased pain and swelling immediately, and you would have been limping. You should not be concerned because you lack any of the abovementioned characteristics.

I hope I have answered your question.

Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards.
