Can antibiotics be discontinued following vomiting?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have BV, and my prescribed medications are, Doxycycline and Flagyl (Metronidazole). I take them at 5 AM and 5 PM every day. However, the last two times after my morning dosage, I had vomiting. I have tried drinking lots of water and sitting upright, but it did not help. Can I repeat the dosage?

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern.

Vomiting is a known side-effect of Flagyl (Metronidazole) and Doxycycline.

I would suggest you the following measures.

1) Take both the medications separately with a 3-hour interval between them.

2) Try to avoid eating while taking these medications.

3) You can eat in the available time interval between both the medications. If you feel nauseous, take Ondansetron MD 4 mg. This will help with nausea and vomiting. If you vomit immediately after the consumption of the antibiotic, take another dose after an hour. If the vomiting occurs after a while, you need not repeat the dose.

I hope this helps.

Kindly revert in case of further queries.

Thank you.
