Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I am 19 years old and completely healthy, other than severe anxiety and maybe hypertension. When I went to the doctor a couple of months ago, I had a panic attack, and my BP was 168/108 mmHg, then 158/100 mmHg. What disorders could cause high blood pressure at such a young age? Can this kill me at my age? Is it safe to exercise?

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I thoroughly read your query and understand your concern.

Hypertension can be due to several causes, the most common being essential hypertension, of which the exact cause is not known. A sedentary lifestyle, obesity, high salt or sodium intake, and substance use can all cause high blood pressure. Anxiety and panic disorder can also cause a rise in blood pressure. Investigations to be done include TFT (thyroid function test), lipid profile, LFT (liver function test), serum electrolytes, and RFT (renal function test). Relax. It will not kill you if you keep it controlled. Yes, exercise is safe and, in fact, beneficial. Remember, every problem has a solution. You just need to try solving it, and help is just a step away.

Feel free to ask if you have any further queries.

Kind regards.
