What could be done to manage frequent mouth ulcers?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am suffering from mouth ulcers, and I wonder what may be the cause for it. Is it a serious problem? Should I consult a doctor?

Please answer.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have read your query and understand your concern.

You are suffering from aphthous ulcers, they can be caused due to various reasons such as stress, nutritional deficiency (Iron, Vitamin B12, and Folic acid deficiencies), hormonal changes, acid reflux, and tongue trauma due to sharp teeth or tongue-biting habit. It may also be due to excessive intake of sour and citrus foods, uncontrolled diabetes, and other immunocompromised conditions. I suggest you follow the instructions given below -

1. Warm saline water gargles are a good remedy for oral ulcers. You can also do gargles with a solution of Benadryl (Diphenhydramine cough syrup) and Milk of magnesia (laxative) in a 1:1 ratio.

2. Topical application of a numbing gel over the ulcers will also provide instant relief, especially while eating.

3. Take a multivitamin tablet once daily for 15 days.

4. Avoid spicy, sour, and acidic foods.

If your symptoms do not subside even after following the instructions given above, then I will suggest you visit a general dentist and get treatment from them. The dentist may prescribe you steroid medications depending on your condition.

I hope this has helped you out.

Thanks and regards.
