How to manage atrial fibrillation?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Regarding the results of my son's chest PA X-ray: He is 18 years old, and the impression in the X-ray report suggests an apicolordotic view. What does this mean or what is the explanation?

Answered by Dr. Ilir Sharka

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Since the left atrial volume is apparently dilated and a prosthetic valve has been implanted, anticoagulation would be necessary, even though LAA (left atrial appendage) closure could minimize the risk of thromboembolism. Neither of the drugs can prevent atrial fibrillation (aFib) due to persistent mitral stenosis. Digoxin could help control the ventricular rate during aFib recurrences. However, both drugs have potential adverse effects and require follow-up.

Regards.
