Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I got an IUD about four months ago. Before the IUD, I would bleed for 3 to 4 days with no cramps. With the IUD, I spot almost every day, and the days I do not spot, it smells horrible. Then I get the worst cramps ever. Is it normal? My vagina has the worse smell.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

IUD (intrauterine device) does not really cause any infection, but in the initial 1 to 2 cycles, spotting may continue for long before it stops in some women. The concern here should be foul smell and discharge, which is likely due to vaginal infection mostly bacterial vaginosis. This has to be ruled out with a high vaginal swab culture and may require a course of antibiotics for a week. IUD per se is unlikely to cause these symptoms if it is a non-hormonal IUD like copper-t. Please get a vaginal swab culture done. Regards.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
