Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
My mother is 78 years old, diabetic, and taking medications for her condition. She has been bedridden for the past four months and has developed a bedsore wound in the buttock area (photo attached). She was admitted to the hospital for the last 10 days due to a urinary infection and elevated diabetic levels. What can be done? Please help.
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I understand your concern. It seems to be a pressure-related bed sore (an ulcerative form of erosion). To prevent further issues, avoid friction and pressure on the site. Proper antiseptic precautions are necessary to prevent additional infections. Lifelong surveillance is required, as this can potentially lead to high-risk ulceration. Supportive treatment is necessary. I suggest you apply Povidone iodine ointment at night for 20 days and cover it with a clean gauze piece and leave it for two days, then change the dressing every two days until the lesion clears up. Additionally, I suggest taking vitamin C chewable tablets once a day after breakfast for 30 days.
Thanks and regards.
Patient's Query
Thank you doctor for the reply,
Should I use the clean gauze with ointment or without ointment?
Hello,
Welcome back to icliniq.com.
First, clean the area with normal saline and a cotton gauze piece. After cleansing the area, apply antibiotic cream or gel at night for 20 days.
Thank you.
