What is the treatment for benign prostate hyperplasia?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

My father is 55 years old. Recently, he had done an ultrasound scan where the technician thought that there is an enlargement of the prostate and then he checked my father's prostate. He asked my father to urinate to check for urine retention. He checked my father, and there was no urine retention. He did not say anything afterward. Can it be a malignancy? Please suggest.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Benign prostate hyperplasia is a common problem that happens due to increasing age. Symptoms usually start with difficulty in urinating, repeated nighttime urination, and narrow stream. These symptoms can be managed with oral drugs. USG is not a test to detect malignancy, as it will recognize only the enlargement. There can be few signs like invasion or hypoechoic lesion that can point to malignancy. In such cases, we advise for PSA testing and prostate examination followed by a biopsy. Having PSA (prostate specific antigen) at high levels can point towards malignancy. You can do a PSA testing if there is a suspicion seen on USG. If it is normal and there are no symptoms seen, then there is no need to worry.
