How do I manage blackheads, whiteheads and mild acne?
Patient's Query
Hi doctor,
I have combination skin with blackheads and whiteheads. I also have tanning on my face and neck, mild acne at times, uneven skin tone, and acne marks. What to do?
Please help.
Hi,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I understand your concern.
Combination skin with blackheads, whiteheads, mild acne, uneven skin tone, tanning, and post-acne marks is very common, especially in patients with a history of acne and underlying PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome), as hormonal imbalance can contribute to recurrent breakouts and pigmentation.
Your concerns can be managed effectively with a simple, consistent skincare routine and appropriate medications.
For treatment, apply Azelaic acid 20 percent daily at bedtime in a thin layer over the face and neck. Azelaic acid helps reduce blackheads and whiteheads, control mild acne, improve uneven skin tone, and lighten tanning and acne marks. Mild tingling or dryness may occur initially, which usually settles with regular use.
In the morning, apply the Clindamycin gel in a thin layer to the acne-prone regions. This will assist in controlling the bacteria that cause acne and reducing the inflammation. In the end, use sunscreen daily in the mornings.
Sunscreen is extremely important to prevent further tanning, pigmentation, and darkening of acne marks, especially when using active creams.
For cleansing, use face wash twice daily to gently remove excess oil and impurities without stripping the skin. Follow this with moisturiser, applied both morning and night, to maintain the skin barrier and reduce dryness or irritation caused by acne treatments. Even combination or acne-prone skin requires regular moisturization.
Other factors include the lifestyle of the patient. Try not to touch or squeeze the acne as it can make scarring and poor texture worse.
Try to reduce consumption of sugar and junk food, keep stress under control, and take your PCOS medication on schedule because hormonal balance can have a positive effect on skin condition.
With regular use of this routine, you should begin to notice gradual improvement in acne, skin texture, and skin tone within six to eight weeks.
I hope this has helped you.
