Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I keep getting blood blisters on my gums whenever I eat something. I also get them on eating bananas. They disappear after taking an antihistamine and keep reappearing. I do not have any known allergies. Is this an allergic reaction or anything else?

Kindly guide.

Hello,

Welcome to iclinq.com.

I understand your concern and would be happy to help.

The majority of blood blisters go away on their own. The ones which do not resolve can be treated with diet modifications and medicines. Check your food's ingredients and avoid foods containing acetic acid or citric acid. It is also present in natural foods like oranges and grapefruit. Also, decrease your alcohol and hot beverage intake. Blood blisters also form due to stress. I suggest you get a CBC (complete blood count) done to check your platelet levels. If these measures do not work, you can go for a radioallergosorbent test.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.
