I spit saliva with a little blood while clearing my throat. Can gingivitis cause this?

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 38-year-old female. Sometimes when I clean my throat, I spit saliva with a little pink blood. I have no cough at all, nor am I sick. I went to the dentist, and he told me I had gingivitis. I went to an Otolaryngologist two months ago for an unrelated reason but had not noticed anything. What could be the cause? I did a blood test a year ago, and everything was normal. Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Do you have a clogged nose? Do you feel like something falls from the back of your nose in your mouth? Do you also have any weight loss, night sweats, or family history of lung cancer?

Patient's Query

Thank you doctor,

No, I do not have anything from these. I have a clogged nose in the morning only.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I was expecting this could be due to dryness of the nose causing your secretions to become bloody as they fall at the back from the nose especially when you sleep (not knowingly). You can see it when clearing the throat specially in the morning when spiting or coughing sometimes dental bleeds can also present like that.

Try using saline drops in your nose and humidifier along with daily mouthwash. Also, if you smoke I would suggest trying to quit so that you can avoid developing chronic bronchitis.

If you ever develop, cough or shortness of breath or unintentional weight loss then consider CT scan of the chest.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
