What do abnormal sodium, lymphocyte, chloride, and RDW levels on the blood report indicate?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I underwent a blood test today, and everything came normal except the following:

  1. Carbon dioxide: 20 mEq/L; Normal: 21 to 33 mEq/L; Status: Low.
  2. Chloride: 95 mEq/L; Normal: 98-107 mEq/L; Status: Low.
  3. Sodium : 149 mWq/L; Normal: 134-146 mWq/L; Status: High.
  4. Absolute lymphocyte count: 4300/u; Normal= 0.7 to 3.1/uL; Status: High.
  5. Lymphocyte %: 40 %; Normal 14 to 46 %; Status: Normal.
  6. RDW: 12 % Normal=12.3 to 15.4 %; Status: Low.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

You should remember that the results of investigations vary from one laboratory to another due to sample collection technique, use of reagents, test procedure, and faulty mechanisms. From the attached reports (attachments removed to protect the patient's identity), carbon dioxide, chloride, and RDW (red cell distribution width) levels are slightly lower than normal. Sodium and absolute lymphocyte levels are higher than normal. A temporary increase in absolute lymphocyte count is normal after any type of infection. It might indicate that body is fighting against an infection. If you have any doubts, I suggest you undergo these investigations after one month. You can consult your doctor for further details or evaluation if you find any abnormality in those results.
