What are the causes for sudden blurry vision in one of the eyes?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Why did I wake up this morning with sudden blurry vision in one of my eyes? I woke up this morning and put on my contact lenses, but I still could not see at all clearly out of my left eye. However, my right eye's vision was very clear. I tried another contact lens in my left eye, thinking it was just a faulty contact lens, but my vision was still blurry. Should I see my eye doctor?

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Now according to you, your left eye was normal last night before you slept. After you woke up, you discovered your left eye had blurred vision which was not corrected even with contact lenses. There are many causes of sudden blurred vision. It can also be non-threatening, which might resolve itself in a few hours. It would be best if you consult an ophthalmologist immediately if it has not resolved in a few hours.

I will need some of your medical history to be able to diagnose you better. Examples include:

  • High blood pressure.
  • Any history of stroke.
  • Any history of a heart attack.
  • Any other medical issue.
  • Smoking and drinking alcohol.

Sudden loss of vision can be due to a stroke or high blood pressure, and both of these conditions are very dangerous to your eyes; therefore, you should consult an ophthalmologist immediately. I hope you are satisfied with my answer. However, do write back with further information so I can better answer your query.

Kind regards.
