Will lesionectomy help for small lesions?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have two small lesions on my frontal lobes. I read lesionectomy surgery is possible using a laser to burn the lesions. What are your thoughts?

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I would like to know details about your symptoms and also would like to see images showing those lesions and their radiological report. Is the diagnosis about those lesions confirmed on neuroimaging or still doubtful about the etiology of those lesions? Burning brain lesion by laser is basically focused radiation therapy, called a cyberknife. But by that method, a biopsy of the lesion cannot be taken out. The decision about the type of surgery is based on its location or radiological characteristic or histopathological character and other co-morbid conditions of the patient.

Patient's Query

Thank you doctor,

I have been experiencing issues with thinking and other cognitive issues and also some personality changes. This is all for the past 11 months after I had a septic injury infection to my left ankle. I was in the hospital for 12 days. I have been reading that once candidates have had lesions removed, they have regained themselves back. The report states it may be multiple sclerosis. I have not had the tests because I have apathy and have been extremely depressed. But if it is not multiple sclerosis, can this surgery be done? What can be done if not? Please see the attachments and advise.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

There is no attachment with your reply message. As per your description, there are some lesion in your brain, the nature of which are not confirmed yet. And your clinical description seems to be having depression and apathy. I suggest you consult a neurologist physically with all your reports and need to evaluate further regarding the lesions in the brain. Only after it will be decided what to be done for these brain lesions, meet the psychiatrist in person for depression and apathy.
