Can one get pregnant if the condom breaks during the intercourse session even though the ejaculation occurs outside the body?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My partner and I had sex right before her period started. My condom tore, but I pulled out and ejaculated outside. She is now late for her next period, and I want to know the chances that she could be pregnant. She has had thyroid level fluctuations in the past and is being treated for it.

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

To get pregnant, the sperm must be released inside the vagina of the female. These sperms then need to fertilize an egg which may or may not be available depending on the ovulation pattern of the female. If the egg was available and got fertilized, then the fertilized egg is required to be implanted in the uterus of the female. When all this happens successfully, then a female is said to have conceived. Now in your case, although you have shared details, I would be grateful if you could tell me the menstrual pattern of your partner. When was her last period? When is her next period expected? If she has any history of irregular periods?

So now, coming back to your case, although the condom broke and you ejaculated outside, I would like to tell you that even precum has adequate sperm content to cause pregnancy, so there is a chance of pregnancy. Further, you told it was right before her period, so if it was a day or two prior to her periods, then generally the uterus lining is ready for shedding, and pregnancy should not stay, but it is the human body, and as you said that there is a history of thyroid and if the periods are slightly delayed then again there is a possibility. Please tell me how many days of delay is there now in her periods? Do not worry; although relatively less but there is definitely a possibility of pregnancy, but I will request you to please share the details as requested so that I can help you even better.
