Is my 34 week baby at risk from breech and Atarax use at 29?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I am a 29-year-old female, and I am 34 weeks pregnant. This is my first pregnancy. My recent scan report shows AFI 9.4 inches, FL 2.7 inches, AC 12.1 inches, BPD 3.6 inches, heart rate 149 beats per minute, the fetal movements are normal, and the fetal weight is 5.9 lbs. The impression of the report shows hydramnios and a big head with breech presentation.

  1. Will there be any complications for my baby?
  2. I used Atarax 25 mg tablets for a rash on my foot for 20 days. Is this drug safe during pregnancy?

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

During pregnancy, the volume of amniotic fluid is maximum at 32 weeks, when it may be slightly above 7 inches, but it is a matter to worry about if it persists after 36 weeks. It is significant if it is associated with any baby anomalies or defects in the brain or spinal cord or kidney or bowel, or any genetic problems.

Your baby is absolutely fine, so why worry then? Just one measurement of the head cannot be considered to be bad; everyone has a head of a different shape. This will be abnormal only if there is any problem with the brain, like extra fluid in the brain or cysts, etc. I am sure there is nothing of that sort.

The baby's weight is within the normal range for 32 weeks, so there is no growth restriction or baby anomalies, or abnormal blood sugars. The breech is not important; the baby can still turn, especially if the amniotic fluid is normal.

Only at 36 weeks, it will be finalized. I would advise you to go to a better scan center where they handle high-risk pregnancies. Out of all these, tablet Atarax (Hydroxyzine hydrochloride) is not advised during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

There are so many other safer medications for the rashes. No one can confirm that the baby has no problem due to the medication. They are seen only after delivery if the baby has the risk of seizures. These are only possibilities; not every baby will have it. Do not think that your baby will have it. So, just relax, for the time being, and pray well. The baby will be fine.

Hope I have clarified your doubt.

Do write back.

All the best.
