Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My family went to an indoor water park a few months ago. To keep my son from going under the water after a raft ride, I tried to hold him up but subsequently ended up flipping the raft. My right ankle or calf slammed against the concrete lip and I got an instant bruise which is the size of a softball. About four to five weeks later a large painful bump formed under the bruise, the bruise was still dark grey with a ring of purple. After some months the bump went away but the large softball size bruise remains. It is slightly tender but not bad at all. What could this be? Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern. It seems like you had a hematoma that has resolved but It is difficult to determine without a physical examination whether you have actually torn a ligament. It is normal to have a painful lump under the bruise and it is called a hematoma. The fact that it has persisted for such a long time raises the possibility that you may have injured a major blood vessel.

A picture would be very helpful if you can share it, otherwise would suggest showing it to your primary care provider.

I hope this helps you.

Regards
