Hello doctor,

My vagina is sore and itchy There is discharge too and this started after my period. The period lasted about 11 days and sex is painful. I was diagnosed with a hormonal imbalance a long time ago. Kindly help.

The probable causes include: 1. Candida vaginitis: Cheesy white discharge. Itchiness and redness of the vulva and painful sexual intercourse. It is common in young ladies with hormonal imbalances and pre-or post periods. 2. Bacterial vaginitis: Greenish to grey discharge with a bad smell. Also, it can present with itchiness and pain during intercourse. 3. Trichomoniasis: Infection with Trichomonas vaginalis that causes red cervix and vaginal discharge. 4. Bacterial Infection or sexually transmitted disease: It has multiple causes like Chlamydia and Gonorrhoea.

Investigations to be done

Investigations to be done include: 1. High vaginal swabs and culture to detect the cause. 2. Vaginal examination.

Treatment plan

The treatment plan includes oral medication or suppository treatment depending on the swab results. Depending on the results, the decision of treatment of the sexual partner will be assessed if needed.
