What are the effects of TCA peel on the skin?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I applied 35 % TCA peel before two days and then I got some burning and redness on the area. It is all black now and also getting darker day by day. How can it heal faster?

Is there a chance of leaving out scar?

Please help.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Did you apply the peel yourself?

Please send the good quality photographs of your face to comment further.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thank you for your answer.

Yes, I applied it myself. I had applied it on my forehead as trial. Nothing happened on that spot and so I applied to cheeks. It turned red and by three to four hours it started getting black. I have attached the photos for your reference.

Please help.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I have gone through your history and the photos (attachment removed to protect patient identity). You should have reported it immediately. Yes, the chance of a scar is there. Immediately start taking the following medications with the consent of your doctor.

Tablet Omnacortil 40 mg (Prednisolone), once daily in the morning after breakfast for seven days. Capsule Adcef 300 mg (Cefdinir) twice daily for seven days. Apply Cort-H gel (Hydrocortisone) twice daily and also apply Photostable sunscreen gel twice daily over whole face at 8 AM and 2 PM (three fingertip units each time). Do not forget to cover your face if you are going out in sun.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thank you for your answer.

  1. What kind of scar it will cause?
  2. Can that scar be taken care of?
  3. If yes, what can I do for that?

I have attached photo of the other side of face. Please help.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

The most common scar that results from post peel burn is post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. If secondarily infected then it can lead to atrophic or depressed scar. I have suggested you all the necessary medications to abort inflammation and infection.

Follow the instructions religiously and let me know in 7 to 10 days.

Thank you.
