Patient's Query
Hi doctor,
I want to know the potential risks of high cholesterol and its impact on cardiovascular health. My family and I usually have foods with more oil. If I cook with less oil, they do not eat. So I am stuck here. Also, are there any lifestyle factors, genetic predispositions, or other considerations that may contribute to elevated cholesterol? My husband’s blood pressure has also been high recently, at 160/110 mm Hg (millimeters of mercury). Are there specific dietary recommendations to help manage high cholesterol levels? What is good cholesterol and bad cholesterol? What are the foods included in that? Please help.
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I have read the query, and I can understand your concern.
High cholesterol levels can increase the risk of cardiovascular diseases. Lifestyle factors, genetics, and diet contribute to elevated cholesterol. Foods high in saturated and trans fats can raise LDL (bad cholesterol) cholesterol. Good cholesterol (HDL) helps remove LDL from the bloodstream. To manage cholesterol, reduce saturated fats, increase fiber intake, and exercise regularly.
Your husband's high blood pressure requires attention. Please tell me what medicines he is taking and have his renal function test done. Dietary recommendations include reducing sodium, maintaining a healthy weight, and adopting a heart-healthy diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins. Consider consulting a nutritionist for tailored guidance.
I hope this will help you.
Thank you.
