Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I have mild pain and discomfort where my pancreas is, and I cannot eat or drink much more. I ate a small portion of chicken, potato salad, and green beans for dinner and had apple cinnamon oatmeal for breakfast. It took a few weeks to be able to eat this, and I was barely eating during that time. I do not drink nor eat badly since I got H-pylori three years ago. Which I still do not think I have not fully got rid of. I had my first major pancreatic attack three years ago and have been self-treating. I am thinking of visiting a local gastroenterologist. I think I have chronic pancreatitis. I have not been diagnosed. Kindly help me.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand that you must be very upset about your ongoing chronic pain and inability to eat because of pain. The diagnosis of pancreatitis requires blood, stool investigations, plus radiological evidence on CT (computed tomography) scan or MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) scan of the abdomen. If you have not got any investigations, then you need to go and must undergo some testing to establish the diagnosis of pancreatitis, and secondly to establish the cause of pancreatitis.

You have chronic recurring pain, which suggests whether you have chronic pancreatitis with stones in the pancreatic duct or possibly recurrent episodes of acute pancreatitis. The one such cause like alcohol, which you do not have. However, there are various other causes that are likely the cause, such as hyperlipidemia (increased triglycerides), high calcium, worms, gall bladder stones, pancreatic divisum, sphincter of Oddi dysfunction (SOD), and hereditary (genetically mediated) pancreatitis.

I must tell you, the pain in the stomach or pancreas area can be arising from something else, like peptic ulcer disease, gall bladder stones, functional epigastric pain syndrome. For me to tell you the likely diagnosis (since it is not yet established), I would need a detailed history. For which I suggest you use consultation, or use chat option, as per your convenience. If you have undergone any investigations so far, kindly upload those as I can interpret those on the background of your symptoms. I hope this was helpful.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
