Patient's Query
Hi doctor,
I have chronic sinusitis, and the doctor prescribed me a treatment that involved nose drops that contain antibiotics. When I take those nose drops, I feel them getting into my throat. Should I swallow them? Is it a problem if I do so? Will anything happen to me? Also, do I need surgery? In what cases should I get the surgery done, and can I live peacefully with it?
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
Dear patient, chronic sinusitis with deviated nasal septum is an indication for surgery. As mentioned by you, the nasal drops have been prescribed with antibiotics. I believe it must be "decongestant" nasal drops that are usually prescribed. If so, please make sure you do not use them for more than three days, or else after a while, the nasal mucosa stops responding (rhinitis medicamentosa). I would prefer and suggest regular saline nasal drops for my patients that can be used multiple times and it does not create any issues. Secondly, there is a way to put nasal drops in the nose. The drops will act on the sides (walls) of your nose and not in the throat. So immediately after putting the drops, dab the nose, and this will prevent the drops from going down your throat. Thirdly, I would suggest you get a consultation and imaging done for your sinuses. For temporary relief, you can use steam inhalation after nasal drops and Vitamin C. Kindly follow-up to know more.
