Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My friend who is 35 years old is a chain smoker. He usually smokes 10 to 15 cigarettes per day he knows that it is not good for his health but he cannot come out of it. Please help us with what we can do about this. Is there any therapy or medication to cure this deadly habit? Should he seek any medical advice in person with a doctor?

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Thank you for your query.

I can understand your concern. Smoking is a dangerous habit that can lead to various health problems, including lung cancer, heart disease, and respiratory diseases. Quitting smoking is the best thing your friend can do for his health. Here are some steps he can take to quit smoking:

  1. Set a quitting date: Encourage your friend to choose a date to quit smoking and stick to it. This will give him time to prepare mentally and physically for the challenge.
  2. Create a plan: Help your friend create a plan to quit smoking, which may include strategies such as avoiding triggers, finding healthy alternatives to smoking, and seeking support from friends and family.
  3. Seek support: Encourage your friend to seek support from a healthcare provider, a quit smoking program, or a support group. These resources can provide guidance, encouragement, and tools to help him quit smoking.
  4. Use nicotine replacement therapy (NRT): NRTs such as nicotine gum, patches, and lozenges can help your friend manage cravings and withdrawal symptoms during the quitting process.
  5. Consider medication: Your friend may benefit from medication such as bupropion or varenicline, which can help reduce cravings and withdrawal symptoms.
  6. Practice self-care: Encourage your friend to practice self-care during the quitting process, such as getting enough sleep, eating healthy foods, and exercising regularly.

I hope this helps. Thank you.
