Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

What is the best contraceptive pill to be used to avoid pregnancy?

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

The best choice of contraceptive pills varies from one individual to another. What may be suitable for one person may not be for another. In general, pills which mimic the natural hormonal levels in the body are most effective and tolerable with the least side effects. Let me give the options available to you:

1) Combined oral contraceptive (COC) contains estrogen and progesterone and is similar to the hormone present in our body. The newer COC have low estrogen levels this prevents side effects like bloating, nausea, and weight gain. These are to be consumed for 21 days and pill-free days. Example: Yaz, Yazmin, Ovral, and Femilon.

2) Extended COC, continue the pills for three months before a pill-free period. These reduce the number of periods in a year.

3) Progesterone only pills - only progestins are given, but the failure rate is higher then COC.

Then there are options of implants and injections which do away with the need to take pills daily.

I hope this helps.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
