What are the causes of chest pain and throat burn?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have a cold for three or four days. I was taking Fexofenadine 180 for cold twice a day and Paracetamol 700 mg for headache and fever (not more than 100 F), constantly drinking hot water or tea. It got extremely bad today. I cannot stop coughing (dry cough), have runny nose since yesterday, and also sneezing (which could be because of my usual problem which got resolved after I started using fluticasone propionate, but I had not had this continuous sneeze for weeks).

Now my diaphragm (I think) hurts badly and slight mid-back pain. My throat is burning, I feel like it will start bleeding at some point, and my voice is changed. Kindly suggest.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have read your query and understand your concern. I can provide some general suggestions for managing cold symptoms. However, if your symptoms are severe or worsening, I highly recommend seeking medical attention from a healthcare professional.

1. Rest and stay hydrated: Getting plenty of rest allows your body to recover while staying hydrated helps to thin mucus and soothe your throat. Drinking warm liquids like hot water or tea can help alleviate throat discomfort.

2. Over-the-counter medication: Taking over-the-counter cough suppressants or expectorants may help reduce coughing and provide relief. Keep in mind that you should follow the recommended dosages and precautions on the packaging, and it is best to consult a pharmacist or healthcare professional before starting any new medication.

3. Gargle with warm saltwater: Gargling with warm salt water can help reduce throat inflammation and soothe discomfort. Dissolve half a teaspoon of salt in warm water, gargle, and then spit it out.

4. Steam inhalation: Inhaling steam from a bowl of hot water or using a humidifier can help moisten your nasal passages, relieve congestion, and ease breathing. Be cautious to avoid burns when using steam, and ensure proper ventilation in the room.

5. Maintain good hygiene practices: Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or your elbow when coughing or sneezing to minimize the spread of germs. Wash your hands frequently with soap and water, or use hand sanitizer when soap is unavailable.

I hope this helps you. Thank you.
