Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I have constipation, and I have tried magnesium citrate, milk of magnesia, prune juice, and softeners for five days. I took lots of water, drinking at least a gallon of water for seven days. Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I would be happy to assist you with your query.

I understand you are suffering from constipation and have tried various medications for the past five days and drinking plenty of fluids. The probable cause of your condition is constipation. No investigations are needed. Constipation is a very common medical problem that can affect adults of all ages. Firstly, you may wish to try conservative measures such as increasing the amount of fiber in your diet. This can be through food, such as bread, wheat, rye, pasta, and barley. A high-fiber diet helps increase gut motility and helps with bowel movements. The treatment plan includes:

1. Increase the amount of fiber in your diet.

2. Encourage mobility by walking.

In terms of laxatives, there are various types of laxatives that all work in slightly different ways. You can try osmotic laxatives such as Laxido (Macrogol, sodium chloride, and sodium bicarbonate) and Movicol (Macrogol, sodium chloride, and sodium bicarbonate). These work by absorbing fluid and making the stools easier to pass. There are stimulant laxatives such as Senna (colloidal silicon dioxide and croscarmellose sodium). This works by stimulating the gut to improve bowel movement. Then there are bulk-forming laxatives such as Fybogel (citric acid and riboflavin sodium phosphate), which increases the size of the stools to make your body want to pass a bowel motion. I would suggest initially trying an osmotic laxative such as Laxido and taking two to four sachets regularly until you are passing nice soft stool motions. Once you are passing on a regular basis, you can reduce the amount of sachets and gradually decrease as necessary and then stop. If you develop severe abdominal pain or blood in your stools, please seek help from a healthcare professional, as you may require further tests.

Please let me know if your constipation symptoms resolve.

Hope this addresses your query.

Kind regards.
