Can a woman get pregnant if she has unprotected sex after taking a contraceptive injection?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have used a contraceptive injection for the first time. I got the shot just before giving birth and have been spotting since then. I had unprotected sex while I was spotting. Can I get pregnant?

Please help.

Hello,

Welcoem to icliniq.com.

I went through your query and understood your concern.

It would be better if you provide your drug and medical history as well. I suggest you have progesterone-containing contraception. Ladies who breastfeed have late fertility returns compared to those who do not breastfeed. The injection Medroxyprogesterone is a hormone-containing contraceptive that gives side effects of irregular bleeding, irregular periods, weight gain, mood variations, etc. I suggest you do a pregnancy test to confirm pregnancy. I also suggest you have combined oral contraceptive pills to regulate your period cycles and iron supplements to reduce the chances of anemia.

I hope this has helped you.

Thanks and regards.
