My dad is diabetic and he takes Clopidogrel. Can he get the COVID vaccine?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My dad is 74 years old and has been diabetic for 30 years. Below is a summary of his other conditions. He had an MI and CABG a few years back. Hemorrhage in the temporal and occipital lobes after Lomarin (administered for occlusion in the arm).

Intermittent hyperkalemia. He has been in good health other than some cold or fever, which he had last month. Can he get the Covishield vaccine? I read somewhere that people taking blood thinners should not take them. Is it true? He takes Clopidogrel.

Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Thanks for the query.

There is no contraindication for Covishield with Clopidogrel. Those with an acute illness should not get the vaccine. One should get 6 to 8 weeks of complete recovery. If he is in good health, he can receive. Stable cardiac patients can get this vaccine.

If he has had any other vaccine, such as influenza, then he should wait for 28 days before getting the COVID-19 vaccine. If there is a fever, then he should get it after recovery from the fever.

I hope this helps.

Hello doctor,

Thank you for the reply.

He had a cold and a fever for about two weeks last month and recovered. He has been feeling normal since then, but it is not one month yet. Can he still take it?

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thank you for the reply.

Sorry, one more question, when he had a cold, we did a CBC that showed WBC 8500, neutrophils 5865 (69%), lymphocytes 1360 (16 %), lymphocytes percentage was showing as low below 20, but the count was fine. Should he test CBC before the vaccine?

I hope this helps.

Please revert in case of further queries.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

There is no need for CBC before vaccination. Only if platelets are low or suspected to be low, then CBC should be done.

I hope this helps.
