What could cause a crunching sound in the front teeth?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I went to the doctor this morning for a deep clean. I heard one of my front teeth make a crunching sound. I have checked it repeatedly today, and it does not seem loose. I wondered if this could be excess tartar coming off or something more serious. I was just afraid my tooth was going to pop out.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thank you for your reply.

I noticed it twice, once last night and once this morning. It was a crunching sound, and I wondered if it could have just been leftover residue from the cleaning. So, what do you think, Is the tooth trying to come out?

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

No, if you have not noticed such a sound throughout the day, especially when you are biting or chewing your food, it is unlikely that the tooth would have cracked. Do not worry. Besides, scaling cannot produce cracks in the tooth. The water scaler can only remove deposits in between the teeth surface.

If the dental cleaning is not done properly, some residues will be left. It might be sound generated because the opposite tooth is hitting the clear surface of the tooth where the deposit is removed now.

Can you notice any tartar over that tooth still in case they have not done the scaling properly or any mobility of the tooth? Were you noticing the crunchy sound?

I hope that you get your answer.

Please let me know if you need any help.

Thank you.
