Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am 24 years old and have degenerative disc disease in my lower back. I am experiencing pain while sitting, standing, and arching my back, but it becomes better while moving. I have also undergone MRI scans. I am physically active and want to know what activities I should discontinue to avoid further damage to my disc. In particular, should I avoid mountain biking, running, rock climbing, skiing, and whitewater kayaking? Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have read your query, and I can understand your concern.

You mentioned that you are suffering from degenerative disc disease but you are only 24 years old. Have you missed mentioning information regarding an injury that leads to degenerative disc disease development? I suggest you perform core strengthening exercises, avoiding sitting for more than 25 to 30 minutes at a stretch, doing gentle stretches, and increasing or maintaining your spinal mobility to keep the symptoms at bay. You do understand that the symptoms of disc disease will appear from time to time, and this is the nature of degenerative disc disease. I suggest you take NSAIDS (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) during a bad phase and consider physiotherapy for reducing symptoms. Consult a specialist doctor, and take these medicines with their consent. You may need surgery if the condition is advanced.

I hope this information will help you.

Thank you.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
