Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

My wife and I recently had unprotected sex before and is the first month it was negative. She recently had her appendix surgery before her period. And now, her next month's periods are late. Today 39 days completed but periods have not come. Her period cycle is 28 days. Sometimes her belly aches and I think periods have come but they have not come. What are the reason of that? Please advise.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand that you and your wife are concerned about her missed period. There can be various reasons for a missed period, including pregnancy, stress, hormonal imbalances, weight changes, medications, and medical conditions. Here are some possible explanations for your wife's missed period:

  1. Pregnancy: Although your wife had a negative pregnancy test result in the first month after intercourse, it is still possible that she could be pregnant. Home pregnancy tests are not always accurate, and it is possible to have a false negative result, particularly if the test is taken too early. If your wife has not had a period for 39 days, she should consider taking another pregnancy test.
  2. Stress: Stress can cause hormonal changes in the body that can disrupt the menstrual cycle. If your wife has been under a lot of stress lately, this could be a possible explanation for her missed period.
  3. Hormonal imbalances: Hormonal imbalances can occur due to a variety of factors, including thyroid disorders, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), and menopause. These imbalances can cause irregular periods or missed periods.
  4. Weight changes: Rapid weight loss or gain can also cause hormonal imbalances and disrupt the menstrual cycle.
  5. Medications: Certain medications, such as birth control pills, can affect the menstrual cycle and cause missed periods.
  6. Medical conditions: Certain medical conditions, such as diabetes and autoimmune disorders, can also affect the menstrual cycle.

Regards.
