Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My son is 2 years old. He can only say a few words like mama, baba, nana, gugu, etc. He cannot even clearly speak his mother tongue. However, he can clearly point a thing when asked. He can also recognize his closed relatives. We have tried to teach him more words like didi, pisi, etc., but all in vain. Can I know where the problem is? Does he require counseling?

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Firstly, I would like to know if his motor milestones are adequate? If they are not, please evaluate his hearing by an audiologist. It might so happen that he may have a mild or a moderate hearing loss. As you say he points at what is asked, he might be able to hear your voice, but he may have a hearing loss which might go unnoticed. Do both of you work? If yes, he might be having a lack of stimulation towards his mother tongue. Thus, he might not be picking up the language. It is essential to talk to babies to develop their language. Temper tantrums and stubborn behavior in kids may also lead to language delay. Check for a tongue-tie too. It may cause difficulty in speaking. Consult a proper speech therapist for evaluation and treatment.
