What are the treatment options for a deep cavity in molars?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I will not be able to visit the dentist for two weeks. I have a huge hole in my molar, and it hurts so bad; when I drink water, my pain is reduced. I have been taking Ibuprofen for the last two days. The pain is so bad that I do not know how to sleep today. Please help me.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

You have been suffering from an infection of the root canal, which is the reason for your pain. The hole you observe is because of a deep infection of the tooth. Instead of trying to drink more water, I suggest the following to numb the pain:

  1. Ointment containing Choline salicylate and Lidocaine or Benzocaine gel.
  2. Rinse with lukewarm salt water twice daily.

And Ibuprofen is just a painkiller; it will not work when there is an infection. Antibiotic prophylaxis will be needed for three to five days.

Hope I have clarified your query.

Thank you.
