Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Is Cymbalta good for depersonalization? I want some tips to overcome this. Also, how to get rid of apathy?

Answered by Dr. Ashok Kumar

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understand your concerns. First of all, I do not think Cymbalta (Duloxetine) have great potential in the treatment of depersonalization. In my experience, I found SSRI group (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor) of medications are much superior in the treatment of depersonalization in comparison to SNRI group - serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (Cymbalta). Having said this, depersonalization is best treated with psychotherapy than medications. Only a few patients respond to medications, although psychotherapy helps the majority of patients with depersonalization. Regarding lowering the possibility of depersonalization, the best strategy is to manage the stress. As we know the intrapsychic conflict plays crucial role in the development of depersonalization, the management of stress and conflicts can have tremendous impact on further progression and mitigation of depersonalization. Regarding apathy, the treatment depends on the cause. For example, you have apathy due to depression and antidepressants will be useful. Similarly, if you have apathy due to depersonalization, then psychotherapy is the best option.
