How to help an 18-year-old who is going through depression?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My brother is 18 years old; he is currently going through a tough phase of depression. He is not able to go out of the home. Currently, he has no friends to talk to. He also has a bad habit of picking his hair from his head. Bald patches are seen. Also, he gets angry about small things and starts fighting with family members. He says he does not want to leave the house; he wants to stay in the house forever.

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Thank you for your query.

I read your query and understand your concern. Unfortunately, it appears your brother suffers from trichotillomania, a form of obsessive-compulsive disorder. In this disorder, patients have an irresistible desire to do something (hair pulling) despite knowing the fact that it is neither desired nor useful. Unfortunately, patients fail to control this behavior despite knowing the consequences. As a family member, it is essential to acknowledge the difficulties encountered by the patient rather than criticize him. So I suggest you to consult a psychiatrist in your city without delay.

I hope this has helped you. Thank you.
