How to manage depression and suicidal thoughts?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I am writing on behalf of my father. Two years ago, my dad was terminated from his job and fell into depression. Suddenly, one day, he began exhibiting strange behavior, as if he were possessed. He attempted suicide by jumping from a building, but fortunately, he survived, and we promptly sought medical help. The doctor prescribed some medication, and he improved. However, after six months, he relapsed into similar behavior. It has been two years now, and he appears to be stable, but he rarely leaves the house and spends most of his time indoors.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I am glad you chose icliniq for your medical-related queries.

I understand your concern and will try to help you with it.

Based on your description, it appears that your father likely developed stress-induced depression and psychotic features after losing his job. I understand how challenging this must be for your father and your entire family. It is a positive sign that he is currently stable. However, he will require ongoing support to help him reintegrate into daily life. You mentioned that he avoids going out and prefers staying at home. This behavior could stem from various factors such as anxiety, residual depression, negative symptoms, and persistent stress related to his job loss and social status. It is advisable to have him assessed by a psychiatrist and consider counseling and psychological support. This can assist him in gradually rebuilding his confidence and improving his functionality. Encourage him gently to engage in activities like taking walks during early mornings or evenings, preferably with someone accompanying him. Additionally, incorporating yoga into his routine could prove beneficial.

I appreciate your trust in icliniq.com and for giving me the chance to serve you.

Our goal is to prioritize your health and help you according to your preferences and needs.

Thank you.
