Are my fasting blood sugar and HbA1c levels normal?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I am a 25-year-old female. My husband who is 30 years old was diagnosed with diabetics. I was shocked about it and I went for a fasting blood sugar test where mine was 111. I was worried since it is considered as prediabetics. So doctor here told to take a HbA1c test, it was 4.8. So the doctor told that I am alright and nothing to worry. What should I do? I am stressed out.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Well, FBS (fasting blood sugar) can be altered due to many reasons, and it shows only the present sugar in your body at the time you gave your blood. But HbA1c (glycosylated hemoglobin )can show you the effect of sugar and the long-term effects of it on the hemoglobin molecule, which is more reliable. If it is normal and your doctor told you you are fine, then believe it, and yes, please start lifestyle modifications after consulting your family GP or a diabetologist. Take care.
