Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My mother is suffering from diabetic retinopathy. She recently had a laser-treatment for her eyes when she had blurry vision. After laser treatment, her left eye is fine, but her right eye condition worsened. She recently had surgery about a week ago. When she went again, they suggested a vitrectomy for her left eye, which is completely fine, but they did not say anything about her right eye. I am attaching the reports she got from the doctor for reference. Please suggest to us if there is any way to treat her blurry vision in the right eye and the next steps for us. I am confused about why they suggested a vitrectomy for the left eye when she has no vision issues, but her right eye was blurry, and they did not say anything about it. Can you please let us know if there is any way she can regain vision in her right eye?

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

From the reports (the attachments are removed to protect the patient's identity), I could see that your mother's right eye has vitreous hemorrhage. Blood has come into her vitreous space. It is most likely because of complications of diabetes and hypertension in your mother's case. Also, her outer retinal layer is damaged. It cannot be repaired by surgery or drugs. It occurs on long-term effects of vitreous hemorrhage and diabetes or hypertension, as well as age-related factors. The left eye has an epiretinal membrane. As a result, an extra inflammatory layer has developed over the retina, which can be removed by surgery. They have suggested surgery for LE (left eye) because they cannot do much about her decreased vision in RE (right eye). You can consult them regarding intravitreal Ranibizumab injection in RE as a last resort. Apart from that, not many options are there for RE. LE, if epiretinal membrane removal is successful, the vision should improve. I hope you find it helpful. Regards.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Is there anything that can be done to keep her vision in the right eye from worsening? Apart from keeping her sugar and hypertension in control.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I suggest antioxidants like tablet Isite AF (Lutein, Zeaxanthin, vitamin E, vitamin C, L-Glutathione, manganese, zinc, selenium, and copper) or tablet Macugold (Astaxanthin) once per day for three months. Apart from that, Micronac (Nepafenac) or Nevanac (Nepafenac) eye drops three times per day for three months. This regimen should help. It would be best to consult the ophthalmologist and take their advice. Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thank you. I will go for an ophthalmologist. I want to know one last thing is there any chance that her sight can completely go because of this on her right eye? Is there any research or surgery that can be done to replace the retina or repair it shortly?

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

Replacing the retina has not yet been successful, and I do not think it will be for at least another 15 years. As per her current condition, if her blood sugars and blood pressure are well controlled, her right eye vision should remain stable. Still, she will have to be on regular follow-ups, and any other damage in the retina due to diabetes or hypertension, when they occur, will have to be checked and treated. Thank you.
