What causes loose motions in a 9-day-old baby?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor

My baby is nine days old. He is having loose motion, and his stool is thin. I have given him Enterogermina suspension once but he has got loose motion six times in seven hours. Should I give him milk? What to do in such a condition?

Please advise.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

It looks like this is your first child. Normally, children under the age of six months pass stools 10 to 15 times a day or once every two days. Kindly do not mention these as loose motions. It is a normal phenomenon and will not go away with any medicines.

All you need to see is if the child has lethargy, refusal to feed, dehydration, excessive vomiting without passing any stools, convulsion, or documented fever. These conditions warrant further evaluation and mostly admission to the hospital. I hope I have cleared all your doubts.

I hope that you get your answer.

Please let me know if you need any help.

Thank you.
