Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My 3-year-old son frequently passes his stools after eating or drinking; he is still on breast milk. We went to see his pediatrician about this, and he later gave us Zenworm 400 and instructed us to continue taking it after a 15 days break. He suffered from a high fever after taking the first dose, and he also frequently passed the loose motion. We had also taken him to the laboratory for a stool test. His eating habits are excellent. He continues to eat but is underweight. Please help us and suggest a medication for his stool problems and weight increase.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

If the child is still passing loose stools, the child must have become dehydrated. If the child is dehydrated, re-assess the child and, if required, get the child admitted. Giving Zenworm (Albendazole 400 mg) is of no use in this case as it seems more like viral diarrhea. All you have to give extra is syrup Zincolife (zinc) 0.5 teaspoon twice a day for 14 days along with ORS (oral rehydration solution) 3.5 fluid ounce with the passage of each loose stool. No food restrictions are required. Regarding nutrition, you can give home-cooked food which is slightly mashed. You can start to reduce breastfeeding. Regarding anemia, I suggest, it is better to evaluate with CBC (complete blood count) and then start supplementation for anemia. Start supplementation only after the problem of loose motions is resolved. If there is still failure to gain weight it is advisable to do screening for celiac disease. Admit if the child is having dehydration, lethargy, and refusal to feed.

I hope this helps.

Thank you and take care.
