How can diastolic dysfunction be effectively managed?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I was diagnosed with diastolic dysfunction. The report states that the E velocity is 84.2 cm/s, and the maximum MVA velocity is 133.5 cm/s. What does this mean?

Please suggest.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concerns.

Diastolic dysfunction means there is impaired cardiac relaxation. This is not typically a cause for concern and is quite common in older adults, those who are overweight, individuals with hypertension, and people with other conditions that should have been ruled out on the echo and ECG (electrocardiogram). However, it may cause symptoms such as shortness of breath, pedal edema, and others. It is important to follow a low-salt diet and consider low-dose diuretics like Torsemide for shortness of breath.

I hope this helps, and feel free to reach out if you have any doubts.
